Transforming Clinical Trial Management with Tableau Next and Agentforce
Clinical trials fail for many reasons, but one of the most preventable is poor site performance. When a trial site starts struggling with patient retention or enrolment, every day of delay costs money and potentially delays life-saving treatments. That's why we built a comprehensive demonstration showing how Tableau Next's new agentic analytics capabilities can transform clinical trial operations.
The Challenge
Managing clinical trials across dozens of sites is like conducting an orchestra where you can't hear half the instruments. Traditional dashboards show you aggregate metrics - 78% enrolled, 87% retention - that look acceptable on paper. But hidden in those averages are individual sites in crisis, disgruntled patients and protocol deviations that could derail your entire trial.
Building a Realistic Solution
We created a complete clinical trial ecosystem within a Salesforce Developer Organization, generating 18 months of interconnected data that tells real stories. Our Python scripts produced over 50,000 records across 10 datasets - from patient visits and lab results to adverse events and drug dispensation records.
The data includes nuanced patterns that clinical operations teams actually face: rural sites with transportation-related dropouts, seasonal enrolment dips during holidays, and higher protocol deviation rates at community hospitals compared to academic medical centres.
Agentforce in Action
The real innovation comes from Tableau Next's Agentforce integration. Instead of clicking through 75 sites looking for problems, users can simply ask: "Which sites are underperforming?" Agentforce analyzes enrolment rates, retention metrics, and protocol deviations simultaneously, identifying at-risk sites that would be invisible in aggregate views.
Beyond Simple Analytics
The system doesn't just identify problems, it enables immediate action. Click a button to create an intervention case with all performance metrics pre-populated. Ask Agentforce to explain its reasoning. Transform analytics from a rear-view mirror into a tool for meaningful actions.
Technical Lessons Learned
This exercise was an excellent project to get hands on with a realistic scenario and test what can and can't be done with the latest tech from Salesforce. From setting up SDOs, building agents, dealing with all (and there are a lot) of the bugs, creating useful semantic models and many tips and tricks along the way.
Looking Forward
This demonstration only scratches the surface. The rich datasets we've created could support predictive dropout modelling, safety signal detection, and automated enrolment forecasting. For organizations running clinical trials, this approach could potentially mean the difference between FDA approval and trial failure.
Watch the demonstration to see how Tableau Next and Agentforce can transform your clinical trial operations from reactive firefighting to proactive site management.
