New licensing with Alteryx One: What You Need to Know

1 September 2025

Alteryx is an analytics tool that connects to data wherever it may be: a database, the cloud or desktop file. Automating repetitive processes, Alteryx helps eliminate errors, all within a user-friendly, low-code (or no-code) environment. It preps, blends, and enriches your data to deliver quick, valuable insights with your favourite viz tools.

Alteryx One is new licensing with a single platform experience that brings together analytics, automation, and AI. If you're wondering how these changes affect you or your team, this guide covers everything - from why new licensing and how it compares to legacy.

Why Is Alteryx Changing Its Licensing Model?

Alteryx is evolving to meet the needs of modern organisations such as having hybrid cloud environments. Focusing on user management and controlling access to AI features is key. Here is why Alteryx making the shift:

Simplification: Easier for organisations to deploy and manage users.

Cloud-readiness: Licenses now work seamlessly across desktop and cloud.

Scalability: Better align pricing with feature usage and business value.

Ultimately, this change reflects Alteryx's strategic move toward a more cloud-first, role-based ecosystem, where capabilities can scale with users' needs.

What Licensing Options Are Now Available?

Alteryx has moved toward user-based packages matching functionality with analytic maturity, the three editions look like this:

  • Starter Edition: Cloud-only for basic analytics. Ideal for small teams who are just getting started (up to 10 users).

  • Professional Edition: For advanced and basic users, it includes Alteryx designer on-prem or cloud (customers have the flexibility). As well as Auto Insights, which allows users to understand the ‘why’ behind their data.

  • Enterprise Edition: Everything in Professional plus scheduling and monitoring. This is enterprise level governance. Access to all types of users including  the business who simply want to view the results.

Pricing is set out in Tiers determined by the number of advanced users, and on Enterprise this also includes a fixed number of automation runs.

What Do the Full Creator and Basic Creator Licenses Include?

Under Alteryx One, the licensing structure has been refreshed. Professional and Enterprise Editions include two types of Designer licenses:

Basic Creator: Best suited for analysts who need to build workflows and prepare data.

Full Creator: Includes everything in Basic Creator plus more advanced tools like predictive modelling and macros.

These replace the older licensing model where there was less distinct tiering between functionality levels. Below is a comparison between the licence types, especially in the context of what existing Designer users might be familiar with:

Are These Still Desktop Licenses?

Yes, with a twist. Alteryx One licenses are still desktop-based, but have a new activation mechanism*. Instead of license keys, user account are provisioned via an admin console.

This enhances security and simplifies the user experience - especially for IT teams managing large deployments.

*On-prem product activation requires an upgrade to version 2025.1 and later.

Final Thoughts

Alteryx One represents a big step toward a more flexible and scalable future. Whether you're a long-time Alteryx user or just getting started, now is the time to evaluate your license needs. This model is designed to grow with your business, making it easier to unlock value from your data across both desktop and cloud.
